Home Remedies for Tinea Versicolor

Tinea Versicolor is a skin condition which is signified by the appearance of white patches on the body. It is a fungal infection caused by Malassezia globosa fungus in majority of cases. It is largely found in the geographic regions that have tropical climate that is warm and humid. Common symptoms of tinea versicolor are white patches, scaling and flaking, slight itching and these patches tend to turn into pink and red tinge on exposure to sun and heat.

They are mostly found on arm, back, neck and chest and appear like pigmentation. A defining feature of this condition is that it tends to relapse in majority of cases after completely clearing off. Medicated anti-dandruff shampoos and anti fungal ointments are recommended for Tinea Versicolor. In this writeup we will introduce you to various home remedies that can help you in getting rid of this skin condition.

Tea Tree Oil :-

    1. Tea tree oil is an effective home remedy for tinea versicolor because of its anti-fungal properties.
    2. It will inhibit the spread of the infection and prevent recurrence.

  2. Add 5 to 7 drops of tea tree oil to 1 tablespoon of extra-virgin olive oil or coconut oil.
  3. Apply this oil on the affected area using a cotton ball.
  4. Allow it to dry on its own, then rinse it off with lukewarm water and pat dry.
  5. Follow this remedy twice daily for a few weeks.

Coconut Oil :-

    1. Coconut oil is an effective remedy for any type of fungal infection, including tinea versicolor.
    2. Themedium-chain fatty acids in coconut oil work as natural fungicides.
    3. This means it helps stop the growth of the fungi responsible for the infection.
  1. Apply some extra-virgin coconut oil on the affected areas.
  2. Allow it to dry on its own.
  3. Another option is to mix 1 tablespoon of extra-virgin coconut oil and 5 or 6 drops of cinnamon oil.
  4. Apply it on the affected skin. Wait 15 to 20 minutes before rinsing it off with warm water.

Follow either of these remedies 2 or 3 times daily until the infection clears up.

Aloe Vera :-

    1. Aloe vera has a protein called 14 kDa that possesses antifungal and anti-inflammatory properties that are effective in treating tinea versicolor.
    2. It can significantly reduce the fungi’s ability to spread.
  1. In addition, it has many healing properties that promote healing of the damaged skin.
  2. Extract fresh aloe vera gel from an aloe vera leaf.
  3. Apply the gel directly on the affected skin areas, 2 or 3 times daily for several weeks.
  4. Another option is to mix a few drops of lavender oil in 1 teaspoon of aloe vera gel.
  5. Apply it on the affected areas 2 or 3 times a day.

Garlic :-

  1. Garlic is an effective remedy for Tinea Versicolor.
  2. Consume 2 cloves of garlic everyday with warm water on empty stomach regularly if you are prone to this skin condition.
  3. Application of garlic oil or juice can also help you in conquering this fungal infection.
  4. Apply it everyday before bath and let it dry for about half an hour.
  5. Wash properly thereafter with a mild soap to alleviate the strong odor of garlic as well as the infection.
  6. Apart from these simple remedies it is important to modify your lifestyle accordingly.
  7. Keep your skin dry and regularly use anti fungal powder instead of the cosmetic one.
  8. Wear cotton clothes and steer clear of tight clothes.
  9. Expose your skin to sun and fresh air for at least half an hour every day.

Apple Cider Vinegar :-

  1. Apple cider vinegar is a successful home remedy for many ailments.
  2. ACV applied topically to the tinea and also taken as a tonic with baking soda dramatically decreased the rash.
  3. Olive oil or aloe vera gel can be applied to soothe the skin between ACV applications.
  4. Aloe vera has many healing properties also.

Essential Oils :-

    1. Lavender oil and tea tree oil (diluted with water) are effective home remedies for tinea.
    2. These natural remedies have been used for centuries to treat infections.

Grapefruit Seed Extract :-

  1. Grapefruit seed extract is a natural cure for fungus infections.
  2. It is applied to the rash 2-3 times a day.
