What is Jock Itch?

It is a fungal infection. Medically called Tinea cruris, jock itch is basically a type of ringworm. As you might be knowing, the misnomer ringworm is a fungal infection that affects the outer layers of your skin, hair, or nails. Just like ringworm that appears on visible skin areas, jock itch that usually occur in the hidden areas of your skin, look like blister shaped skin rash. The edges of these blisters have bumps and they look reddened. These rashes are intolerably itchy and burn quite often. They spread to the adjoining areas very fast. But the more important question that might be surfacing in your mind is whether jock itch is contagious?

    • Wearing the same set of underwear throughout the day can exacerbate the symptoms.
    • This happens because you have allowed sweat to build up.
  • Underwear especially nylon and synthetic underwear absorbs a lot of sweat and moisture.
  • Stick to cotton underwear and briefs.
  • Change them 2-3 times a day especially if you are physically active.
  • Nylon fibres will also exacerbate the itching.

  • Soak a bath in a tub and add a few generous teaspoons of salt to the bath.
  • The salt will absorb the excess moisture from the affected area and make the area dry thus allowing the rash to heal.
  • It may cause mild irritation initially.Do this 2-3 times a day for 3 days to see a substantial improvement in your condition.

Tea tree oil effectively cures jock itch :-

  • No prizes to guess this, tea tree oil is an excellent natural antifungal agent.
  • Not only does it help you get rid of jock itch caused due to fungus or yeast but also the one that is caused due to bacterial infection.
  • Tea tree oil also has anti-bacterial properties.
  •  You can get almost instant relief from the itchiness as well as swollen redness of skin due to jock itch.

Rubbing alcohol relieves jock itch :-

    • Rubbing alcohol, as you might be knowing, is a surgical spirit, a liquid made with special denatured alcohol solution containing about 70% of pure, concentrated ethanol (ethyl alcohol) or isopropyl alcohol.
    • It is generally used as a disinfectant and as a soothing and cooling agent for relief from aching muscles or burns.
  • Jock itch that also burns can be soothed with rubbing alcohol and it also cures fungal infection to a great extent.
  • What more, it is also a drying agent and thus it prevents jock itch by keeping your skin moisture free.

Garlic can help you get rid of jock itch :-

  • Garlic has anti-bacteria and anti-viral properties that help cure jock itch fast.
  • However, due to its strong properties, when you apply garlic onto your skin, you may feel a burning sensation initially.
  • If this gets intense, remove the garlic and wash the area properly.
  • If you have a sensitive skin, garlic may give you more discomfort so use it cautiously according to the level of discomfort that you feel.
  • You may also make it a little mild by mixing it with some oil as mentioned in the below home remedy.

Listerine can help you get rid of jock itch:-

Listerine is an excellent home remedy for fungal infections like jock itch and athlete’s foot, thanks to its antiseptic, antifungal and antibacterial properties.

  • Use a cotton ball to apply the amber Listerine mouthwash on the affected skin and leave it on until it dries completely. Initially it will hurt, but you will soon get relief from the soreness and inflammation.
  • Repeat three or four times daily for a few months for complete relief.

Note: Do not use Listerine on open wounds.

White Vinegar can help you get rid of jock itch:-

White vinegar can also help greatly in dealing with a skin infection like jock itch as it has antifungal and antiseptic properties.

  • Mix one part of white vinegar and four parts of water. Soak a washcloth in this solution and use it to wash the affected area, gently and thoroughly. Allow the solution to dry on its own; you need not rinse it off. Repeat once or twice daily.
  • Another option is to apply a mixture of equal parts of white vinegar and coconut oil on the affected skin. Leave it on for a few hours before washing it off. Do this twice daily until you get rid of the problem.

Bleach can help you get rid of jock itch:-

Bleach has antiseptic, antibacterial and antifungal properties that help treat jock itch.

  • Mix one-fourth cup of bleach in a bathtub full of water.
  • Soak in it for about 15 minutes daily or every other day, depending upon the severity of the condition.

Be sure to pat dry your skin after your bath as moisture can worsen jock itch.
