How to Increase Breast Milk Production

Many mothers fear they are not producing enough breast milk to satisfy their baby. In most cases, the fear is based on false alarms, such as shorter nursing times or natural appetite growth. These are natural scenarios many mothers experience when breastfeeding. If your baby, however, is not gaining weight, or worse, if he’s losing weight, then increasing breast milk production can help.

Garlic to Increase Breast Milk:-

    1. Among its many curative properties, such as benefitting the immune system and preventing heart disease, garlic is said to help increase breastmilk supply.
    2. However, there isn’t much research to back this up.
  1. If you eat a lot of garlic, it can affect the taste and smell of your breastmilk.
  2. One small study found that the infants of mothers who ate garlic tended to feed for a longer time, suggesting that babies may like the flavour of garlic in breastmilk.
  3. However, the study was too small to draw any meaningful conclusions.
  4. And some mums say that their baby gets colicky if they eat a lot of garlic.

Green leafy vegetables to Increase Breast Milk:-

  1. Green leafy vegetables such as spinach (paalak), fenugreek leaves (methi),
  2. mustard greens (sarson ka saag) or lamb’s quarter (bathua) are an excellent source of minerals such as iron, calcium and folate, and vitamins such as betacarotene (a form of vitamin A) and riboflavin.
  3. They are also believed to enhance lactation.
  4. Breastfeeding women are recommended to eat one or two portions of green leafy vegetables daily.
  5. You could cook these vegetables with spices or make snacks like thepla, vegetable poha or idlis.

Holy basil to Increase Breast Milk:-

    1. Holy basil tea (tulsi ki chai)is a traditional beverage for breastfeeding mums.
    2. There is no research to suggest it increases breastmilk production but it is believed to have a calming effect, improve bowel movement and promote a healthy appetite.
  1. As with most herbs, holy basil (tulsi) should be had in moderation.

Dill seeds to Increase Breast Milk:-

  1. Dill leaves are a source of iron, magnesium and calcium.
  2. Dill is believed to improve milk supply, ease digestion and wind, and improve sleep.
  3. Dill is a mild diuretic and should be consumed in moderation.You can use dill seeds whole or ground in many foods such as pickles, salads, cheese spreads and curries. Dill tea (suwa ki chai) is a popular postnatal drink.

Warm Compress to Increase Breast Milk:-

  1. In some cases, low blood circulation in the breasts is the main reason behind inadequate breast milk supply.
  2. If this is the reason, you can use a warm compress on your breast before feeding sessions to increase the blood supply.
  3. Massage your breasts gently for five minutes prior to nursing.
  4. Dip a clean cloth in warm water and wring out the excess water.
  5. Use the warm cloth to gently massage the area around the nipples, pressing the breast against the chest.
  6. After massaging for five to 10 minutes, lean forward and breast feed your baby.

You can also try this as a relaxation technique if you notice your breasts have become heavy, but you are not able to feed your baby. It can help facilitate the flow of milk.

Fenugreek to Increase Breast Milk:-

    1. It is believed that it stimulates sweat gland activity; mammary glands are modified sweat glands.
    2. Fenugreek is considered a good remedy for stimulating the milk-producing glands. Fenugreek contains phytoestrogens that help increase breast milk production.
  1. Soak one tablespoon of fenugreek seeds in one cup of water overnight. In the morning, boil this water along with the fenugreek seeds for several minutes. Strain the solution, and drink this tea every morning until you get positive results.
  2. You can opt instead to take three fenugreek capsules, three times a day for the first 10 days. Then take two capsules, three times daily for the next 10 days. Finally take one capsule, three times daily for another 10 days.

Note: Diabetic and asthmatic women must not use fenugreek remedies.

Cinnamon to Increase Breast Milk:-

  1. According to Ayurveda, cinnamon will also help to increase secretion of breast milk.
  2. When nursing mothers eat cinnamon, it helps improve the flavor of breast milk that many babies seem to like. Plus, it helps delay the occurrence of menstruation after childbirth and prevents early conception.
  3. Mix a pinch of cinnamon powder and one-half teaspoon of honey.
  4. Have it along with a cup of warm milk.
  5. Repeat daily before going to bed for one or two months.

Nuts and dried fruits to Increase Breast Milk:-

  1. Almonds (badaam) and cashews (kaju) are believed to boost breastmilk production.
  2. They are high in calories, vitamins and minerals, providing energy and nutrients.
  3. They make an excellent snack and are easily available.
  4. You could blend them with milk to make delicious badaam milk or kaju milk.
  5. Dried fruits and nuts are used to make traditional foods such as panjiri, laddoos and halwa for breastfeedingmums.

Drumstick to Increase Breast Milk:-

 

  1. Drumstick, also known as sahjan, is a green vegetable with many essential nutrients that stimulate the mammary glands
  2. And also help to open up veins around the breast to improve circulation, resulting in increased breast milk.
