Best Home Remedies for Nasal Congestion, Sinus, Cold , Cough – Stuffy or Runny Nose

Nasal congestion is generally known as ‘blocked nose’ or ‘stuffy nose’. Nasal congestion occurs when there is swelling on the nasal hole, and its leading to build up of mucus, and this situation makes difficult to breathe easily. Nasal congestion can be occur during beginning of pregnancy and hormonal changes.

Nasal congestion in simple terms is known as a ‘blocked nose’ or ‘stuffy nose’. This happens when there is swelling in the nasal cavity, leading to a buildup of mucus. As a result, it becomes difficult to breathe normally. This is a symptom often associated with colds, flus and allergic reactions.

Nasal congestion can be more than merely annoying. It is important to treat it immediately or it can cause other problems, such as ear infections, restless sleep and so on.

There are many ways to clear congestion. This very common problem can be easily treated by using ingredients already in your kitchen. Use any of these remedies as needed to relieve discomfort until you are well again.

Garlic :-

Garlic is one of the best home remedies for reducing nasal congestion. Its antiviral and antifungal properties help fight the respiratory infection causing congestion.

  1. Boil two to three garlic cloves in one cup of water. You may also mix in one-half teaspoon of turmeric powder. Drink it daily until the congestion clears.
  2. Eating fresh garlic cloves can also help relieve stuffiness and discomfort.

Apple Cider Vinegar :-

Apple cider vinegar can quickly clear a stuffy nose as it helps thin the mucus. Plus, being rich in several nutrients, it is also good for your overall health and immunity.

  1. Mix two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar and one tablespoon of honey in a cup of warm water.
  2. Drink this two or three times a day at least for a few days.

Saline Solution :-

Saline solution helps a lot to clear a stuffy nose. Mix a teaspoon of table salt in 2 cups of warm water and mix it well. Now, pour this solution in your nostrils with the help of a dropper. It will give you an instant relief from nasal congestion. You can also do this with the help of a neti pot.

Tomato Juice :-

Drink a glass of hot tomato juice in order to get rid of a stuffy nose. Add a tablespoon of chopped garlic, a tablespoon of hot sauce, a tablespoon of lime juice with a pinch of celery salt to a cup of boiling tomato juice. Sip on it at least 2 times a day.

Herbal Tea :-

Hot herbal tea can help thin the mucus clogging your nasal passages. The herbs in herbal tea will also help flush out the toxins from your body, giving you double benefits.

Simply drink a cup of hot herbal tea of your choice a few times daily until the congestion clears. Peppermint tea is usually considered good for nasal congestion as the menthol in this herb helps open up the nasal passage.

Nasal Irrigation :-

Nasal irrigation with saline solution can also be used to treat nasal congestion. It helps wash away the mucus and irritants from the nasal passages.

  1. Mix one teaspoon of salt in two cups of distilled warm water.
  2. Use this solution for nasal irrigation using a neti pot or some other irrigation device.
  3. Repeat once or twice daily for a few days.

Note: Make sure to use distilled or previously boiled water for nasal irrigation and wash the irrigation device after each use.

Garlic, Lemon Tea :-

Ingredients-

3-4 cloves of garlic
2 cups water
1 teaspoon mint/green tea or normal tea
2 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
1-2 tablespoon honey instead of sugar

Boil mint/green or normal tea with crushed garlic in 2 cups of water and make tea. When tea is ready, add honey and lemon juice in it, never boil lemon juice and honey. Drink this hot mixture 2-3 time a day for fast result. This tea is very beneficial in common cold, cough and sinus.

Ginger :-

Ginger has active element called Gingerol, which heals nasal congestion, cough, cold and sinus problem.

1. Crush few ginger roots and add them into your regular/green tea. The spicy aroma of ginger tea will quickly warm up our congested nasal passage and relieve in sinus symptoms.

2. Take 1 tablespoon fine paste of ginger and mix it with 1 tablespoon of honey and consume this paste twice a day before or after heavy meals to treat sinus problem, nasal congestion, cough, and cold.

3. Add 1 tablespoon of fresh ginger paste in your regular/black/green tea for fast relief in nasal congestion, cough, cold and sinus.

Chicken broth or soup :-

Hot home made chicken soup reduces chest and upper respiratory infections, cough and the symptoms of cold and flu. chicken soup breaks down nasal congestion and facilitate the flow of mucus emission. It also gives relief from sore throat and to loosen thick phlegm.
Just add garlic, ginger and black pepper in your regular chicken soup.

Warm Water :-

When suffering from nasal congestion, it is important to aid a steady flow of mucus through your nasal passages. Warm water can be of great help in this regard. It will also keep the nasal passages moist and prevent them from drying out.

  1. Using a humidifier can help open up clogged nasal passages.
  2. You can also run a hot shower for several minutes so that steam builds up in the bathroom. Breathe in the soothing vapors. Repeat twice daily until you recover completely.
  3. Another option is to wet a washcloth in warm water and place it over your face. Leave it on for 10 to 15 minutes. Repeat several times a day.
