Natural Home Remedies for Muscle Cramps and Spasms

Natural Home Remedies for Muscle Cramps and Spasms

Have you ever felt an involuntary tightness, hardness, or bulging feeling in a muscle? That’s called a muscle spasm. This type of cramping can happen to anyone for a variety of reasons and in many areas of your body.

Spasms are common in the abdomen, arms, hands, and feet. You can also feel them in your calves, hamstrings, quadriceps, and along the rib cage. Many cases of simple muscle spasms are caused by heavy exercise and vigorous sport. Patience, rest, gentle stretching, and massaging the muscle can help alleviate the pain.

Muscle spasms are a common side effect of chronic conditions, like multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy, and McArdle’s disease. People with acute neck and back pain often suffer from muscle spasms. Pregnant women are also prone to muscle spasms because of the sudden increase in weight. Menstruating women suffer from muscle cramps due to uterine contractions, though the severity of the pain varies by person.

While muscle spasms can be painful, relief is available with these seven natural muscle relaxers.

Cold Compress :-

After the initial heat treatment or after the pain has improved, use a cold compress on the sore muscles to provide complete relief from a muscle cramp.

  1. The cold temperature will numb the pain, reduce inflammation and allow the affected muscle to relax. Plus, once the cramp is gone, a cold compress will help reduce soreness by constricting the blood vessels.
  2. Wrap a handful of ice cubes in a thin towel and put it on the affected area for about 15 minutes at a time. Repeat every two hours for one to two days.
  3. Another option is to take a cold shower as needed to relax sore muscles.

Epsom Salt :-

Epsom salt can also be used to treat muscle cramps. The magnesium in Epsom salt promotes muscle relaxation and healing.

  1. Fill your bathtub with warm water.
  2. Add two cups of Epsom salt and stir it thoroughly.
  3. Soak in this bath for 20 minutes.
  4. Usually, taking this bath once will take care of the problem. However, if required you can repeat this remedy the next day.

Note: Epsom salt must not be used by those suffering from heart problems, high blood pressure or diabetes.

Baking soda, ginger powder :-

  1. Mix 2 or 3 tablespoons of salt, ¼ cup of ginger powder
  2. and 2 cup of baking soda in warm or hot (tolerable) water bucket and soak your foot in this water.
  3. This is a useful technique for relaxing muscles.

Hot water bath :-

  1. Heat is considered to provide relief to knotted muscles.
  2. This condition generally occurs due to overwork and applying heat relaxes the muscles.
  3. Thus, soaking in a hot water bath relieves cramps.
  4. If you do not have the time or the means to sit in a hot water bath, a warm towel or a hot water bottle will also do the trick.

Cherry Juice :-

  1. People who sign up for marathons train vigorously, often causing a lot of stress on their muscles.
  2. Cherry juice can help combat the inflammation and muscle pain that is so common in runners.
  3. Studies reveal that drinking tart cherry juice can minimize post-run pain.
  4. The antioxidant and anti-inflammatory qualities in the fruit help to relax muscles naturally.

Apple Cider Vinegar :-

  1. Being high in potassium, raw and unfiltered apple cider vinegar helps relieve muscle cramps.
  2. Low potassium is one of the common causes of frequent muscle cramps. Plus, there are several nutrients in apple cider vinegar that help control the fluid balance in the body, thus preventing dehydration.
  3. Mix one tablespoon of apple cider vinegar in a glass of warm water. Drink this tonic once daily to prevent muscle cramps.
  4. To prevent nocturnal leg cramps, you can mix one teaspoon each of apple cider vinegar and honey and one tablespoon of calcium lactate in one-half glass of warm water. Drink this solution daily at night, about half an hour before going to bed.

Almond oil :-

  1. Other oils that provide relief from muscular pains is Wintergreen oil and Willow bark oil.
  2. Cramp bark and lobella have also proved to be effective.
  3. Make a mixture of these ingredients with extra-virgin oil or almond oil as a carrier oil.

  1. Apply pressure to the area between your big toe and second toe.
  2. “Acupinch” the area between your nose and your upper lip (philtrum). The philtrum is a pressure point in acupressure that may provide relief. Apply the pinching pressure for about 15-30 seconds.

Clove Oil :-

Clove oil has anti-inflammatory properties that help reduce muscle cramp inflammation and swelling. Plus, the anesthetic property of clove oil will help alleviate pain.

  1. Slightly warm some clove oil.
  2. Rub it on the affected area.
  3. Using firm strokes, massage the area for five minutes.
  4. If required, repeat the process again.
