Home Remedies for Headache , Migraine , Sinus – Kill the Pain

Headaches often get brushed aside as nothing more than a common complaint, a quit-your-whining-and-start-working type of thing…if only. While many people suffer them at one point or another, rarity is not the best way to judge just how nasty something can be. The pain of a headache can make day-to-day life a miserable challenge, and forces us to head straight for the aspirin. This is a sticky situation, because ultimately that will only perpetuate the problem.

When you take over-the-counter pain killers all you’re doing is smothering your symptoms and ignoring the real issue of what triggers the headache. Natural remedies for headaches may take a bit more thought than simply popping a pill, but don’t brush them off. They won’t wreak havoc on your body like other over-the-counter or prescription pain-killers do, and you’re less likely to become so dependent on them that you need them for every little ache.

Crush it with cayenne :-

Utilizing something spicy may not sound headache helpful, but cayenne is somewhat revered in the kingdom of natural remedies to treat pain and inflammation. The secret behind its success lies in an ingredient called capsaicin, which inhibits something in our body that is one of the main elements in pain perception called Substance P. In short, Substance P is part of what makes us feel pain, and the capsaicin depletes it. Numerous studies, the first in 1998 in The Clinical Journal of Pain, support that when applied topically to the nasal passages; people experience a significant decrease in the severity of their headaches, all thanks to capsaicin.

You will need…
-1/4 teaspoon cayenne powder
-4 ounces of warm water
-cotton swabs

Dilute a ½ teaspoon of cayenne powder in 4 ounces of warm water. Soak a cotton swab in the solution and stir it around to make sure it’s covered-the powder can sometimes sink to the bottom. Apply the moist swab gently to the inside of each nostril until you can feel the heat. It may be a bit unpleasant at first, but take the burning sensation as a sign that it’s working. When it subsides, your headache will hopefully be wiped out, or at the very least better than before.

Water :-

If the cause of your headache is dehydration, you can easily get relief from the pain by rehydrating your body.

  1. Simply drink a glass of water at the first sign of a headache and continue taking small sips throughout the day.
  2. Along with water, you can have sports drinks. The electrolytes present in sports drinks can treat headaches caused by tension and dehydration.

When suffering from a headache, stay away from drinks like alcohol that can dehydrate your body.

Ice Pack :-

Placing a cold compress like an ice pack on your forehead will numb the pain, help shrink the blood vessels and improve circulation to the area. This particular remedy works well for headaches due to stress or sinus problems.

  1. Wrap some ice cubes or crushed ice in a thin towel. Hold it against your forehead for a few minutes. A bag of frozen vegetables can also serve as an icepack. Never apply ice directly on your skin as it can damage the skin.
  2. Alternatively, apply a cold cloth on your head and temples for 10 minutes and repeat the process for some time until you get relief.

Hot Water :-

Applying heat on the back of your neck can relieve headaches caused by stress. Heat relaxes tense muscles, thus alleviating the throbbing pain.

  1. Simply apply a hot water bag to the back of your neck or take a hot shower directing the water onto the back of your neck.
  2. Another option is to fill a tub with bearable hot water and put your hands in it for 10 to 15 minutes. This will improve blood circulation and thus give you relief from the headache.
  3. If you suffer from chronic headaches, you can dip your legs in a bucket filled with hot water for 10 minutes before going to bed.

Cinnamon :-

Cinnamon is very effective spice which cures headaches associated with the common cold & migraine.

  1. Mix 1 tablespoon of cinnamon with some water to make a thick paste. Apply this paste over your forehead for a few minutes to reduce pain.
  1. Add 2 teaspoons of cinnamon powder to glass of milk. Boil it for 4-5 minutes. Then add one tablespoon of honey to it, mix well and drink this mixture. Follow this twice a day to get rid of headache.

Peppermint oil :-

Apply peppermint oil on the forehead & nose.  Peppermint oil contains menthol which helps soften a headache. Fragrance of peppermint oil stimulates & relaxes the affected nerves that cause a headache.

Go nuts :-

Instead of popping a pill when you get a headache, toss back some almonds. For everyday tension-type headaches, almonds can be a natural remedy and a healthier alternative to other medicine. It acts as a pain reliever because it contains something called salicin, which is also an agent in popular over the counter killers. Try eating a handful or two of these wholesome nuts when you feel the ache start to set in.

Note: People who suffer from migraines may find that almonds are a trigger food

Cloves

  1. Take 6-7 cloves, crush them and put them in small sachet or in your handkerchief or small cotton cloth. Inhale the smell of these crushed cloves.
  1. Crush 2-3 cloves to make a paste of it, add few drop of rose water. Apply this paste on your forehead for 5-10 minutes, and then wash off with water.
  1. Apply few drops of clove oil on your forehead for cooling effect and relief in headaches within few minutes.

Lemon :-

Lemon is a very effective and powerful ingredient to treat headache because it is refreshing and relaxing. Plus, it helps maintain the acid-alkaline balance in the body.

  1. Drinking warm water mixed with juice squeezed from one-half of a lemon will reduce the intensity of a headache. This particular remedy is beneficial for headaches caused by gas in the stomach.
  2. Another option is to apply lemon crusts, pounded into a paste, on your forehead to immediately relieve pain.

Apple :-

Both apples and apple cider vinegar can be used to fight off a headache. They help restore the acid-alkaline balance in the body. Furthermore, simply the smell of green apples can help reduce migraine headaches.

  1. When you wake up in the morning with a headache, eat a piece of apple sprinkled with some salt. Then drink some warm water.
  2. Alternatively, fill a large bowl with steaming hot water and add 3 to 4 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar to it. Hold a towel over your head and take in the steam for 10 to 15 minutes.
  3. Another option is to add 2 teaspoons of some apple cider vinegar to a glass of water. You can also add a little honey and lemon juice. Drink it 2 or 3 times a day.
