Natural Home Remedies for High Cholesterol

The usual indicators of high levels of cholesterol in blood include common fatigue, over sweating and a feel of discomfort, pain and heaviness in the chest and breathlessness. Smoking and consuming alcohol in excess, consumption of high fat foods, obesity and inheritance factors are some of the usual causes for high levels of cholesterol. Nevertheless, high cholesterol levels can be restricted using specific home remedies.

Coriander Seeds for high cholesterol :-

Research has shown that coriander helps lower the levels of total cholesterol, LDL (the ‘bad’ cholesterol), and triglycerides. Coriander seeds also have hypoglycemic effects and can be useful in diabetes management.

  1. Add two teaspoons of coriander seed powder to one cup of water.
  2. Boil the mixture and then strain it.
  3. Drink this once or twice a day. You can add milk, sugar, and cardamom to it and use it as a replacement for your regular tea.

If you do not have coriander seed powder, then simply use coriander seeds or dry roast and grind them to make the powder.

Onions for high cholesterol :-

Red onions are beneficial in dealing with high cholesterol. Scientists in Hong Kong found that they help reduce bad cholesterol and elevate good cholesterol levels. This, in turn, lowers the risk of developing heart disease.

  • Mix one teaspoon each of onion juice and honey. Drink it once daily.
  • Add one finely chopped onion and one-quarter teaspoon of pepper to one cup of buttermilk. Consume it on a regular basis.
  • Also include onion, ginger, and garlic in your diet.

Oatmeal for high cholesterol :-

  • Oats are considered as traditional cholesterol buster.
  • It is packed with soluble fiber and contains beta-glucans that helps reduce the absorption of cholesterol
  • and lower down its level naturally.
  • You can drop your LDL by 12-24%, if you eat 1½ cups of oatmeal regularly.

Drink orange juice for high cholesterol :-

  • Fresh-squeezed or straight out of the carton, orange juice can lower cholesterol.
  • Participants in a recent study increased their HDL levels 21 percent and lowered their LDL/HDL ratio 16 percent by drinking three glasses a day for a month.

Cinnamon for high cholesterol :-

  • Cinnamons have the capability to significantly diminish the LDL & triglycerides, thereby balancing one’s total cholesterol levels.
  • Half a teaspoon of cinnamon included in regular foods or added to water, has a great effect on one’s body.
  • Cinnamon also reduces blood sugar levels and is good for type 2 diabetes.

Red Yeast Rice for high cholesterol :-

  • Red yeast rice is a traditional Chinese medicine that has been used to lower the cholesterol levels.
  • It contains monacolins, isoflavones, sterols, and monounsaturated fatty acids.
  • For lowering the high cholesterol level, consume 1200 to 2400 mg of the supplement once or twice a day.

Note – It should be used under a physician’s direction.

Soybeans for high cholesterol :-

  • Soybeans are well-off in magnesium, phosphorus, protein, calcium, B complex vitamins, and iron.
  • It contains 10 times more calcium than meat. Eating soya nuts, soybeans and other food products made from soy (tofu and soy milk) are the modest way to reduce the production of new cholesterol.
  • It is recommended that consuming 25 grams of soya protein in a day can lower the high cholesterol by 5-6 percent.

Note – Some people may face digestion problems when they eat soya. They may perceive loose stools, stomach ache, or diarrhea. So consult a nutritionist before including this smart food into your diet.

Apple Cider Vinegar for high cholesterol :-

Apple cider vinegar helps lower your total cholesterol and triglyceride levels. In addition, it is a great home remedy for a number of ailments including acid reflux, high blood pressure, gout, upper respiratory infections, and others.

  1. Mix one teaspoon of organic apple cider vinegar in a glass of water.
  2. Drink this two or three times a day at least for a month.

You can gradually increase the amount of apple cider vinegar to two tablespoons per glass. If you do not like the taste of apple cider vinegar, you may mix it with fresh orange juice, apple juice, grape juice, or other fruit juices.

Honey for high cholesterol :-

Honey is loaded with a number of minerals and vitamins which makes it an ultimate cholesterol fighter. Besides, the antioxidants present in honey do not let the cholesterol move out of the blood and also prevents its entry into the lining of the blood vessels.

  • Add 1 teaspoon of honey to 1 cup of hot water. You can also add one teaspoon of lemon juice or 10 drops of apple cider vinegar to this solution. Drink it in the morning. This may reduce excess fat from your system and maintain cholesterol level.
  • Alternatively, take a teaspoon of ground cinnamon and mix it in a cup of boiling water. Cover it for 30 minutes. Afterwards, strain this solution and add one teaspoon of honey to this concoction. Drink it on an empty stomach half an hour before your breakfast.

Fish Oil for high cholesterol :-

  • Fish oils and fatty fish such as tuna, mackerel, trout, salmon, herring, bluefish and sardines are loaded with omega-3 fatty acids.
  • They lower triglycerides and prevent heart ailments. Consume around 1-4 gram of fish oil daily.
  • Moreover, eat at least 2 servings of fish once in a week, most probably fatty fish, as they are the richest source of omega-3 fatty acids.
  • Alternatively, if you are a vegetarian, then include ground flaxseeds which are also rich in omega-3 fatty acids.
