Home Remedies for Phlegm in Throat (Get Rid of Phlegm)

 

Phlegm often accompanies colds and other upper respiratory infections. While not a serious health problem, if phlegm is not treated timely, it can clog and irritate the bronchial tubes and in turn cause a secondary upper respiratory infection.

The presence of phlegm is usually indicated by a constant need for throat clearingconstant coughrunny nose, difficulty breathing, feeling weak and, in some cases, fever. Phlegm tends to collect and congest in the chest and throat and is usually expelled through coughing.

Phlegm contains the bacteria, virus or inflammatory cells produced in response to an infection. In addition to infections such as the common coldflu and bronchitis, phlegm can be caused by anallergic reaction to irritants such as in asthma and hay fever, damaged vocal cords, and excessive smoking.

Dealing with phlegm can be incredibly frustrating and seemingly never ending. But there are effective, natural home remedies that work quickly and without causing side effects.

 

Home Remedies to Phlegm :

Steam :-

Steam inhalation is the best and the simplest way to get rid of phlegm. Inhaling steam into the nasal passages helps keep phlegm in liquid form so it is easier to eliminate from your system.

  • Take a steam shower twice daily. Turn your shower to full heat and stay in the closed bathroom for 10 minutes to help break up the mucus. Be sure to moisturize your body after, as warm water robs your skin of essential oils and moisture.
  • Alternatively, pour hot boiling water in a large bowl. Hold a towel over your head and inhale the steam for five to 10 minutes. This will help loosen the secretions in your lungs. You can use this simple remedy several times a day.

 

Salt Water :-

Gargling with warm salt water is another easy way to treat phlegm. While warm water is soothing for an irritated throat, salt helps destroy bacteria that may be causing your infection and therefore reduces production of phlegm.

  • Mix one-fourth teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water.
  • Gargle with the solution.
  • Repeat this remedy several times a day.

 

Lemon Juice :-

Lemon is a great ingredient for loosening mucus and phlegm. Plus, lemon’s antibacterial property and high vitamin C content improves the body’s resistance to infections.

  • Add two teaspoons of lemon juice and one tablespoon of honey to a glass of hot water. Drink this at least three times a day to soothe your throat and reduce phlegm production.
  • Another simple option is to cut a slice of lemon, sprinkle a little bit of salt and pepper on it and then suck on the lemon slice. It will help force the phlegm out of your throat. Do this two or three times a day.

 

Ginger and Honey :-

    • Ginger has abundant medicinal properties that can treat various diseases.
    • The compounds present in ginger help minimize the symptoms of cold and cough and soothes the respiratory system.
  • Take 100 grams of fresh ginger root and remove the outer skin.
  • Crush it. Don’t add water to it.
  • Take 2 tbsp of raw honey and microwave it for 15 seconds.
  • Now add one teaspoon of grated ginger to honey.
  • Consume two tablespoons of this concoction.
  • Take it two times a day for three days.
  • Alternatively, add one tablespoon of honey to a glass of lukewarm water. Drink this several times a day. The medicinal properties of honey will surely make you feel better.

 

Onion and Lemon :-

    • Peel an onion and grind it in a juicer.
    • Now, squeeze the juice of one lemon in onion juice.
    • Then, pour this blend into one cup boiling water and let it boil for 2-3 minutes.
  • Remove it from heat and add one teaspoon of honey after it cools down.
  • Drink one cup of this mixture three times a day until you feel relieved.
  • Alternatively, finely chop an onion and add two big spoons of sugar. After half an hour, this mixture will transform into liquid. Consume one large spoon of it after every few hours.

 

Carrots :-

  • Carrots are the tremendous source of vitamin C and boost the immune system because of its antioxidant properties.
  • Moreover, it is crammed with several vitamins and nutrients that reduce symptoms associated with cough and phlegm.
  • Extract the juice from 3-4 fresh carrots.
  • Add a little water and 2-3 teaspoons of honey in the juice.
  • Mix it well and drink it 2-3 times a day to clear the phlegm.

 

Garlic and Lime :-

  • Anti-inflammatory properties of garlic and citric acid in the lime clears the phlegm.
  • Boil a cup of water. Remove it from flame and squeeze 3 lemons in it.
  • Now, add 2 crushed garlic cloves, half teaspoon of black pepper powder and a pinch of salt.
  • Stir all ingredients properly and sip this drink.
  • This remedy will provide instant relief from phlegm.

 

Cayenne Pepper :-

    • The stimulating properties of cayenne pepper reduce phlegm and relieve an irritated throat.
    • Mix one-fourth teaspoon each of grated fresh ginger and cayenne pepper.
  • Now add 1 tablespoons of honey and apple cider vinegar and two tablespoons of water.
  • Consume it 3-4 times a day.
  • Cayenne pepper can also be used in cooking your dishes.

 

Chickpea Powder :-

  • Take one tsp of oil in a dish and broil two tablespoons of chickpea powder until it turns light tan.
  • Add one teaspoon of honey and powdered almonds alongside thirty ounces of water.
  • Mix it properly and remove it from the heat. For 4-5 days, drink it twice everyday.

 

Gargle :-

  • In a glass of warm water, add a tablespoon of salt.
  • Tilt your head softly towards back and gargle with this salt water.
  • Don’t swallow it. After a couple of minutes of washing, you will without a doubt feel better.
  • Alternatively, add a dash of salt and one tablespoon of turmeric to a glass of hot water and gargle 3-4 times a day.

 

Chicken Soup :-

  • Hot chicken soup helps treat phlegm and saturate your airways.
  • The warmth of the soup can reduce the consistency  of phlegm and breaks the mucus.
  • Drink it no less than 2 -3 times in a day to clear your throat.
  • You can likewise add ginger and garlic in it to make it all the more mouth-watering.
