Vital Home Remedies For Bedwetting

Up to the age of 3, bedwetting is normal; but after that bedwetting can be as frustrating and embarrassing to the child as the parents. There can be various causes for bedwetting from psychological to physical such as immature nervous system, overproduction of urine at night time, hormonal imbalances, nutritional triggers, physical under development, failure to understand the bladder if full and stress or anxious feeling.

Most children outgrow bedwetting after a particular period as they age. But sometimes bed wetting can be so embarrassing for the child that they start to shy away from social activities. There are numerous home remedies that can be used to stop the bed wetting habit of children as well as adults.

Natural Remedies For Bed Wetting :

When you are sure your child is not wetting the bed because of any underlying medical problem, you can incorporate these simple changes to deal with the bedwetting problem.

Bladder Exercises :-

Bladder exercises help stretch the muscle that controls the release of urine from the bladder and increase bladder capacity. Muscle-strengthening and bladder-stretching exercises are considered good for bladder control.

  • Have your child do a muscle-strengthening exercise involving tightening of the pelvic muscles, holding the position for 5 to 10 seconds, and then resting for five seconds. This exercise has to be repeated 10 times, thrice daily.
  • Encourage your child to hold off going to the bathroom for some time when the urge to urinate begins. This method may be more beneficial for accidental daytime wetting than night time but can help reduce the frequency of bedwetting episodes. It usually trains the bladder to hold an increased amount of urine without triggering the urge to urinate, thus helping children to hold their urine for two to three minutes more, each day.

Note: Holding in urine for long may not be a good idea as the bladder can become a breeding ground for bacteria.

Cinnamon :-

Cinnamon is one of the simplest home remedies for your child to stop bedwetting. It is believed that this spice keeps the body warm.

  • Have your child chew a piece of cinnamon stick thoroughly once a day.
  • You can also combine sugar and cinnamon powder and then sprinkle it on buttered toast. Give this toast to your child for breakfast.

Indian Gooseberry :-

Indian gooseberry, also known as amla, is an excellent Ayurvedic remedy for bedwetting.

  • Crush and deseed two Indian gooseberries. Add one tablespoon of honey and a pinch of turmeric. Give one tablespoon of this mixture to your child every morning.
  • Another option is to give your child one teaspoon of the pulp of Indian gooseberry mixed with a pinch of black pepper powder.

Massage :-

For an easy treatment to cure bedwetting, you can use olive oil.

Simply heat some olive oil and when it is comfortably warm, rub it over your child’s lower abdomen and then massage the area gently for several minutes. Follow this remedy daily until you are satisfied with the results.

Training :-

Kids are too small to be scolded for what they do unintentionally. Therefore, they must be taught in a constructive, healthy way as to how to retain their urine for a longer time. Training can be challenging, but it will be rewarding for both you and your children.

Jaggery :-

Jaggery has a heating effect on the body, keeping body warm from within thus helps to overcome the bedwetting problem. Give a small piece of jaggery every morning with a cup of warm milk and then, post an hour offer roasted sesame seeds and sesame seeds with a little rock salt to the child. Consuming it in above manner for two months will cure the problem.

Cranberry Juice :-

Cranberry juice is beneficial for the bladder, kidneys and the urinary tract. It helps in strengthening of urinary tract linings that can withhold urine for long hours.

On contrary to all other fluids that should never be offered to child before going to bed, fresh cranberry juice is recommended to be given an hour before the sleep time, to reduce and prevent bedwetting. Regularly offering of cranberry juice for several months will stop bedwetting problem completely.

Raisins and Walnuts :-

Offer the tasty snacks of walnut and raisins to child as these together make a tasty remedy for reducing bedwetting symptoms that children will lovingly have. Give one tablespoon of raisins and two tablespoon of walnuts to the child before bed time, to treat the bedwetting condition. Continue this remedial option for at least a few months, till the problem completely subsides.

Double Voiding Before Sleep :-

Encourage the child to completely empty his/her bladder by going twice to the toilet, once at the bedtime routine and one more time, just before getting to sleep. Encourage to use toilet at night also, if required. Help the child with toilet at night till he/she can do it themselves.
