Natural home remedies for hyperthyroidism disease

Natural home remedies for hyperthyroidism disease

The thyroid is a gland that is in the front of the neck. Its major function is to regulate the metabolism of the body by secreting the hormones T4 (thyroxine) and T3 (triiodothyronine). In addition, it also has some effects on the muscles, bones, cholesterol, and heart. When this thyroid gland is overactive, it will begin secreting excessive amounts of T4 and T3. If you experience excessive sweating, lose weight fast and without any reason, become nervous and moody, or feel a fast heartbeat, you can have an overactive thyroid.

Most of the people often suffer from hyperthyroidism because of Graves’s disease that the body’s immune system will attack the thyroid gland. Sometimes, this problem is also caused by the small growths in your thyroid gland called thyroid nodules or swollen thyroid (goiter). Whatever the causes are, if you leave the hyperthyroidism untreated, it can result in bone and heart problems and sometimes result in a condition called thyrotoxic crisis or thyroid storm.

Bugleweed :-

    • The herb bugleweed, also known as Lycopusvirginica, can help manage mild hyperthyroidism.
    • This particular herb reduces the amount of hormone that is produced by the thyroid.
  • Studies have found that it helps decrease TSH levels and impairs thyroid hormone synthesis.
  • Moreover, it helps lower T4 levels and blocks the conversion of T4 to T3.
  • Prepare an herbal tea by putting one-half teaspoon (or a little less) of bugleweed in a cup of boiling water and allowing it to steep for several minutes. Strain and cool, and then enjoy this tea once daily.
  • You can also take this herb in the form of tincture (two to six ml per day). Furthermore, a combination of bugleweed, motherwort and lemon balm is highly effective in treating hyperthyroidism naturally.

Note: Do not use this herb for  hypothyroidism or an enlarged thyroid gland. Also, it may not be suitable for pregnant and breastfeeding women.

Lemon Balm :-

    • Lemon balm, also known as Melissa officinalis, is an herb that can help normalize an overactive thyroid by reducing TSH levels.
    • It contains flavonoids, phenolic acids and other useful compounds that regulate the thyroid.
  • In fact, it blocks the activity of antibodies that stimulate the thyroid gland and cause Graves’ disease, which is a common form of hyperthyroidism.
  • To restore your thyroid activity to a healthy level, drink lemon balm tea.
  • Add two tablespoons of lemon balm to one cup of boiling water.
  • Let it steep for about five minutes.
  • Strain and drink this tea 3 times a day.

You may start the treatment with a lesser dosage, about one-half or one teaspoon of lemon balm, and gradually increase the amount to two tablespoons.

Broccoli :-

  • Broccoli is a cruciferous vegetable that contains substances known as isothiocyanates and goitrogens, which help restrain the thyroid from producing too much hormone.
  • Therefore, anyone suffering from hyperthyroidism must try to eat uncooked broccoli as much as possible.
  • Other cruciferous vegetables that may be helpful are brussel sprouts, cauliflower, rutabaga, turnips, kohlrabi, kale, mustard greens, and radishes.

Oats :-

    • Oats are valuable in hyperthyroidism to combat the weakness and exhaustion caused by the excess hormone secretion in the body.
    • These excess thyroid hormones boost the metabolic rate of the body and increase the activity of the sympathetic nervous system.
  • This in turn adds to the degree of stress and fatigue in the body.
  • Oats have been traditionally considered as a mild stimulant and nervine tonic effectual in nervous debility.

Avoid diet triggers :-

  • Certain foods which are a part of your normal diet may be the trouble makers inhyperthyroidism.
  • Stimulating foods such as caffeine, alcohol and other food items like soy, corn and gluten based products are likely to cause problems.
  • Encouraging the inclusion of food items like fresh fruits, sea vegetables, brassica and raw cruciferous veggies in your diet can prove valuable in hyperthyroidism.

Calcium and vitamin D :-

  •  Hyperthyroidism may have detrimental effects on the bone health and may lead to thinning of bones.
  •   It becomes extremely vital to get that extra dose of calcium and vitamin D on a daily basis to prevent your bones from the risk of osteoporosis.
  • Discuss with your physician regarding the dietary guidelines and about the requirement of additional calcium and vitamin D.

Cut down on sugar and refined foods :-

  • Eliminating refined foods and sugar from their diet is another thing from which the people suffering from hyperthyroidism can benefit from.
  •  Excess of these foods will lead to a rush in the insulin and cortisol hormone which in due course will begin to strain the adrenal glands and pancreas.
  • Improper or weaker functioning of adrenal glands may lead to weaker immunity which in turn can make way for autoimmune disorders such as Graves’ disease.

Kick away stress :-

    • Stress can aggravate any problem on this earth.
    • Chronic stress can also contribute in the growth of hyperthyroidism.
    • While it won’t be possible to eliminate stress completely out of our lives, you should definitely make strong effort to keep a positive attitude and handle stress in a constructive manner.
  • A composed mind and body can go long way in combating with hyperthyroidism.

Regular exercise :-

  • Exercising regularly can help beneficially in hyperthyroidism.
  •  It keeps the blood circulation healthy and ensures good cardiac and adrenal activity.
  • Post medical advice, you can engage in specific regime of cardiac exercise for better results.
